John Campbell

Lieutenant-Colonel John Campbell of the Seventh Regiment was appointed commandant of Fort Detroit in 1764. He arrived at the post in 1765. At Detroit, he proposed a tax increase that was not acceptable to the settlers. A letter of protest was filed and Campbell left Detroit.

After leaving his post at Detroit, Campbell was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs. He maintained that post until the end of the Revolutionary War. Campbell was often required to send supplies to various forts. One record shows that from July 1781 to June 1781, Campbell sent 10,254 gallons of rum to Detroit -- more than that sent to both Michilimackinac and Niagara combined.
