Pierre Jacques Payan de Noyan, Sieur de Charvis

Pierre Jacques Payan de Noyan, Sieur de Charvis, was born in Montreal on November 3, 1695. His parents were Pierre Payan, Sieur de Noyan, and Catherine Jeanne le Moine. On November 17, 1731, Charvis married Catherine Daillebout. They had four children, one of whom (Pierre Louis) was born in Fort Ponchartrain.

Like many of Fort Ponchartrain's commandants, Charvis had a military background. He had been a captain and then major of a company in the marine department.

Charvis served as commandant of Fort Ponchartrain from 1739 to 1742. Not much is known about Charvis' time in Detroit. It is said that he was unpopular because he tried to stop the sale of brandy to Native Americans.

In 1749, Charvis became major and governor of Montreal.
